Hee! A fine example of how “user interface” can impact us in ways we’d never guess.

Shuttle Trail
Posted by miri On 1 February, 2003
Here’s an amazing loop of radar pictures of the debris trail. There have been reports that debris was found not to far from my house – at an IBM facility.
Shuttle Disaster

So close to the anniversary of the Apollo and Challenger tragedies, we have another reminder of the perils of space exploration and travel. I’m sure we will be bombarded ad nauseam about the investigation and possible reasons for the crash – I can’t imagine how awful it would be to be a family member of one of the astronauts lost and have to hear these reports over and over again.
Freedom of Speech

Ah…what a wonderful point: Freedom of speech doesn’t require 51 percent.
The Ground Up

I’m really enjoying this site: The Ground Up. Of course, it’s hard for someone like me to not like a site that says:
Remember, when it comes to this administration, there are no arguments, there is no logic. In the place of deliberative debate, we get “strong leadership,” which translates into reductive morality plays, cheap rhetoric, and petty sophistries. The Sun King feels neither the constraints of syntax, nor reason.

I know this is kind of old, but it’s also quite brilliant – funny, sad and true all at the same time. If only more people would get the message.
Plumbing Test
Posted by miri On 26 January, 2003
Okay, so the theory is, my house’s plumbing is now a-okay and they will fill in the hole in my garage tomorrow. Shall I really push things by trying to run the dishwasher and the washing machine at the same time?
Escalating Costs
Posted by miri On 19 January, 2003
I knew I was going to have to pay two insurance deductibles (for a total of $1,000) plus the cost of new pipes for my recent house repairs. What I didn’t realize was how much the pipes/plumbing was going to cost. So far, around $800. *sigh*
DVD Player
Posted by miri On 18 January, 2003
Well, I finally broke down and put a technological toe in the current century – I bought a DVD player. It took hours, a special convert, 2 extra cable cords and a switcher, but I managed to hook it up to my TV and stereo so that I can still tape things on my VCR and use the bunny ears to improve the TV reception. (Yes, I still use bunny ears – no cable.) I just listened to/watched the U2 DVD someone gave me for Christmas – it was wonderful! On to the next DVD…
Pete? Pete?

This is most disturbing. Please, Pete, don’t let this be true.
