Maple syrup takes over NY

Some friends in NY have reported that they noticed the odd, sweet smell. More reports at Gothamist. So, is it something evil? Something good? Random occurance? Mass hypnosis? EGGO-terrorism?

FEMA Official Says Boss Ignored Warnings

So, when Brownie kept saying he had no idea how bad things were? That was a lie? A politician lying? Go figure!
FEMA Official Says Boss Ignored Warnings

Marty Bahamonde, a FEMA regional director, told a Senate panel investigating the government’s response to the disaster that he gave regular updates to people in contact with then-FEMA Director Michael Brown as early as Aug. 28, one day before Katrina made landfall.

In most cases, he was met with silence. In an Aug. 29 phone call to Brown informing him that the first levee had broke, Bahamonde said he received a polite thank you from Brown, who said he would check with the White House.

When Windows patches go bad…

Bears 1, Keeper 0

Bears eat keeper – at first that sounds pretty horrific. Then you add the rest of the article title “who took their bile” and this paragraph:

The bile is extracted in an excruciatingly painful process which involves slicing into the animal’s flesh and “milking” the substance with a tube.

And you are reminded that justice can often be horrific.

The Shining as a feel-good movie

This is hilarious. Just shows you how they can make a movie seem like anything depending on how they put together the promo.

Storm’s Evacuees Caught in a Clash of Cultures

Here’s an excellent article about the stress and strains of living a forced “nomadic” life can cause on the nomads and local communities.

Damn Cat!

Mishka broke my wonderful nightstand lamp. I lurved that lamp. It took me forever to find one that was the right mix of modern and retro so that it would go with my house and my 1940s bedroom suite. I’m so mad at that damn cat right now that I could throttle him.

Memory Walk – Done

I did the memory walk – it took me an hour to go 5K, but I did it. It had to be hot and 80% humidity today? Sheesh! I think I fucked up my foot, though. I was wearing my sneakers with special inserts, but my feet still hurt worse than they did after walking the Vegas strip. Some tendon/muscle/something under my foot (going from heel to arch) is swollen up big time. Guess I should ice it.

Vegas

Last week, I went to Vegas to hang with some online friends and racers from previous seasons of The Amazing Race. Good times, good times. Photos are here.
