New Laptop

Well, here it is: my first post from my laptop! There’s going to be a bit of adjustment time (I bought a Mac, why?), but so far, I’m really liking it!

I finally put up some new photos…well, mainly old photos I’d never taken off my camera, but we can pretend they are new, right?’

Clean House

My house is all clean…it’s so confusing. (I used the gift cert for free maid service that my mom gave me for Christmas today.) Do people really live like this? It’s wierd…

Miri Medication Mambo

Wow – a TWoP banner ad is linking to this site, so I guess I should put something here, huh?

I’ve been so busy lately, I haven’t really had time to update the site much – sorry. This silly site I made has kind of taken over my life. Add in a second round of banner ads for TWoP and a contact database for a great non-profit and I’m one busy puppy!

Miri gave me a scare last weekend. She was really straining and had blood in what little urine she could get out. I knew it was probably just a bad bladder infection, but she’s been my baby kitty for 15 and a half years, which is pretty old for a cat, and I freak out about her health – especially after having to have Sasha put to sleep last year. I took Miri into the vet first thing Monday morning and the vet did think it was just a bladder infection. “At least, I don’t think she has a tumor.” Ack! Don’t even mention it then! So, I brought Miri home with a little bottle of anti-biotics. I’m supposed to give her two pills a day.

Now, Miri’s never been that good about taking pills, but we had a system: wrap her in a towel, pry her mouth open, shove the pill in there and then hold her mouth shut until I feel her swallow. This would work about 50% of the time. Well, it used to work that often. Now that she hardly has any teeth in the back of her mouth, she’s able to push the pill out the side of her mouth with her tongue. So, after two hours of the Miri Medication Mambo, I give up.

I go to the pet store and get some tasty moist cat treats, bring them home and mush a pill into one. Put it on the floor (luckily, Freya seems to think they are the most awful smelling things in the world and runs from them – so no fighting over the treats), Miri saunters up to it, eats the treat and…somehow manages to leave the pill on the floor. *sigh* We repeat this for three more treats until she finally gets the pill down too. She never gets the pill down on the first try – ever. Personally? I think she does it just so she’ll get more treats.

Home Insurance Sucks

I got my homeowners insurance renewal notice yesterday. They want to decrease the coverage, increase the premium by 30% and increase the deductible by 246%. Are there any homeowners insurance companies issuing policies in Texas that aren’t evil?

Moth Freak

If I ever needed any proof that I’m not cut out for the AIDSWalk Africa, it was the total freak out I had tonight when a moth flew into my face while I was out on my nightly walk.

Numb Legs

I’m trying to mentally pretend I’m going to go on the AIDSWalk Africa even if I can’t afford it. This means, of course, that I need to walk every day to get ready for it. I’ve walked at least a half hour every night since I first read about the AIDS walk. My feet started hurting during last night’s walk. This isn’t really surprising given how heavy I am and given how badly I pronate when I walk (I’m knock kneed and flat footed – yes, I realize I’m painting a very pretty picture here). Add to that very old tennis shoes and…hurting feet is a given.

So, today I went and bought new tennis shoes. I decided to not worry about cost and get a good pair. First, I went to a store where people actually know shoes and know how to fit you. The lady there recommended a pair of New Balance shoes with a heel stabilizer to keep me from walking on the inside of my foot too much. Plus, they come in double-e. Okay. I try them on and they feel pretty good, but I’m still a bit worried about metatarsal support. She recommends an insert. Hmmm. So now we have expensive shoes and an insert. Well, I said I wasn’t going to worry about money, right? And these are darn comfortable, right? I buy them.

I spent the evening walking around the house in them. My heel slips in the back – but it’s done that in almost every pair of tennis shoes that I’ve never bought. This is the curse of having a wide foot and a narrow heel.

Time for my evening walk – I decide to take the new tennis shoes outside knowing that this means I can’t return them. I walk. I think I’m walking faster than I normally do. I know I’m walking faster than I normally do. I’m feeling good! I decide to do a third lap around the school. Somewhere in the middle of the third lap, my feet go numb. They have that kind of “been sitting on them prickly feeling.” The feeling spreads up my legs. It’s all very interesting. I get home and soon after I stop walking they feel better. Could it just be because the shoes were making me walk in a way my legs and feet aren’t used to? The only time I’ve had that feeling before while moving around was towards the end of a 10K (uh, yeah – I was in much better shape then). I certainly didn’t walk anywhere near that tonight.

AIDS Prevention

This is just sad:

The Global HIV Prevention Working Group said fewer than one in five people at risk of HIV infection has access to prevention programs.

*snort*

AidsWalk Africa

I read about this AidsWalk Africa fundraising event and spent the evening wondering if I could get my ass up and in shape enough to walk that and not die. Then I looked at the price of plane tickets…and, well, the ass in shape thing doesn’t seem to matter anymore.

Elfa Shelves

When they say Elfa shelving is “easy to install,” it might be easy compared to other shelving, but it’s still not that easy. I’m just saying.

$25,000 in damages is way over the top, but…ewwwwww!
