12/22: AustinFit training walk

I almost didn’t walk today. First, I’d stayed up way too late last night (and eaten far too many cookies, but that’s another story). Second, it was cold out! But, after hitting my snooze one time too many, I managed to get myself up, out and hurrying to make it to the start in time. It was so worth it. I feel better now than before the walk started – refreshed and full of energy. Yes, it was cold, but not windy or wet – crisp. Plus, I walked with and talked a the very nice Mary Nell. She’s walked 3 half-marathons this year. Talk about inspiring.

11/19: Sparky people

Sparky people

Since I’d been down and out for the count yesterday with a cold and didn’t plan on doing water aerobics after work tonight, I figured I needed to do some different cross-training this morning. Well, I really wanted to go for a walk, but I’m still feeling dizzy and out of it thanks to the cold and didn’t think roaming around my neighborhood in the dark was a good idea. Since this DVD arrived during my sick day yesterday, I thought I’d give it a try – despite the perky looking woman on the cover. (Given my mood, I was sure I’d want to smack her after the first few minutes of the DVD.) She is a little perky, but more matter-of-fact in her presentation than perk, so I could deal.

I did the “ballet-inspired barre routine” and the “equipment-free fat blaster” one. Neither got my heart rate really up and going, but, as with most exercise DVDs, I think that’s more because of my own limitations rather than the exercise routines themselves. The barre routine had a series of plea squats that, even though I wasn’t going that deep, left my hip hurting. Perhaps it’s not wise to do those, I’m not sure. The fat blaster one included a series of planks that I couldn’t do at all since they included what were essentially slowed down burpees – my right hip doesn’t hinge that way. Oh well, I tried them and will probably try them again at a later date. At least I got up off my ass and moved…right?

MRI

Well, that wasn't fun.

Well, that wasn’t fun.

Today I went in for an MRI for a mass on my upper thigh. I’m weirdly not worried about the mass – it’s been there for a long time, doesn’t hurt and hasn’t changed size. I hope that lack of worry doesn’t come back and bight me in the butt.

I’d forgotten how uncomfortable getting an MRI is. Laying flat isn’t comfy because I have such a sway back. Plus, they tied my feet together. This isn’t ideal either due to my knock knees. It’s not bad at first, but a few minutes into the MRI, and I was not a happy camper. This was made worse thanks to my cold. I couldn’t breath at all and spent the whole time paranoid I’d start coughing or sneezing. At one point, I swear the MRI machine was repeatedly yelling “PUTT PUTT PUTT PUTT” at me. I was never a fan of mini-golf.

But the MRI came after the real fun. They needed to get a blood sample to check my liver and then, if that was okay, start an IV for the contrast dye. It’s never been super easy to get blood from me because I have very small veins. Also, I always thought being obese just made it more difficult as well. Today I found out something else: I have rolly veins. That sounds a lot more jolly than it really is. Essentially, trying to get the needle into my veins is a lot like trying to cut a cherry tomato with a dull knife – instead of getting cut, the tomato just rolls away. Tech #1 tried on the inside of my right elbow. He got into the vein, but then it ruptured and the needle came back out (at least, I think that’s what he said). So, next up was the back of my right hand. After digging around there a while, he gave up and escalated me to tech #2. The new tech started inside the left elbow and, after a while, I heard the word “ruptured” muttered again. They then both concentrated on the back of my left hand. They were at it for quite awhile (lots of feeling of tugs and pushing) and finally got something. They took the blood and then taped the crap out of the catheter thingie hoping it wouldn’t fall out before they needed to insert the dye. The dye turned out to be a bit difficult to get in too because, they’d pushed so far in before piercing the vein, that they barely had any needle left to stay in the vein (or something like that). So, one dude kind of kept pressure and pushed on my hand trying to make sure the needle stayed in while dude #2 put the dye in. It wasn’t fun at all.

A simple MRI with contrast baffled two people and has left me with bandages on both hands and elbows. How the hell am I ever going to deal with all the stuff that will need to be done when I get my hip replaced? Oh well, at least this time, there wasn’t a question about whether I would fit into the MRI machine or not (barely did when I had my hip MRI years ago).

12/16: Speed building walk

I went with irony for today's walking shirt.

I went with irony for today’s walking shirt.

Today I actually did the speed building walk I was supposed to do. I don’t like doing it – you are supposed to walk as fast as you can for 1 minute and then at your regular pace for the next minute, repeat until done. Why don’t I like it? I’m a wuss. I’m still not good at pushing myself physically. I might not ever be. When things get tough, my first reaction isn’t to try and ramp things up to push through, my first thought it: forget this! It’s why walking has been working for me as my main form of fitness. It’s not super challenging – I feel like I can do it with no problem. It’s also why, unless I change, I’ll never be an athlete or a super-fit person.

Spinning under the Zilker park Christmas tree is an Austin tradition.

As if the first walk today wasn’t enough, tonight Darra and I participated in the Trail of Lights 5k. In theory, it was a race. In practice, it was a fun stroll through the trail of lights near Zilker park. Plus? We got to do the Christmas tree spin and munch on roasted corn on the cob. Perfection.

12/15: AustinFit training walk

I almost didn’t walk today. I hadn’t had a decent walk since last Thursday. First, I went out of town for the weekend – getting back late Monday night. Tuesday, I came down with a horrid cold and spend most of Wednesday and Thursday laying in bed coughing and sneezing. I woke up Friday, did a Walk-at-Home DVD (my head still felt too weird to walk alone in the great outdoors) and ventured in to work. I wanted to walk today, but should I? Would I make my cold worse? Should I conserve my energy?

The route today was just 7 miles, so I decided to go. If it had been a 10+M day, I can’t say the decision would have been the same. My goal was just get the walk in without worrying about time. Turns out that’s a good thing because I found out that when walking while not feeling well, your heart really gets going. It was beating, on average, 20 more beats per minute than usual. And doing this while I wasn’t going as fast as usual. I was a little light-headed a few times, but overall, I’m glad I went. I always worry about trips/illnesses undoing months of habit building. I wasn’t going to let that happen this time.

Since I figured I’d be going much slower than everyone else, I brought my headphones and listened to some music. (Wearing headphones is usually discouraged for group walks.) So, here’s the playlist:

John Lennon: Instant Karma! (We All Shine On)
Buckwheat Zydeco: Ninth Place
Midnight Oil: Stars Of Warburton
Crowded House: Better Be Home Soon
Tracy Chapman: A Hundred Years
Violent Femmes: Promise
The Reivers: Dragon Flies
Peter Gabriel: The Family And The Fishing Net
Wilson Pickett: In The Midnight Hour
The Weepies: Not A Lullaby
Silversun Pickups: Broken Bottles
The Waterboys: A Boy In Black Leather
4 Non Blondes: Drifting
The Pogues: Gridlock
Patti Smith: Seneca
The Monkees: Pleasant Valley Sunday
The Turtles: So Happy Together
Creedence Clearwater Revival: Hey Tonight
Icicle Works: Reaping The Rich Harvest
The Weepies: How Do You Get High?
Talking Heads: (Nothing But) Flowers

Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros: Mondo Bongo
R.E.M.: Zither
The Decemberists: When the War Came
Janis Joplin: Me And Bobby McGee
Concrete Blonde: Joey
Matchbox Twenty: Shame

I admit I was feeling pretty tired and ready to quit when “Pasado Pisado” came on. Not the best song ever, but one that always cheers me up because it reminds of watching the Spanish Davis Cup team’s drunken, table-dancing celebration after winning the Davis Cup. The best b-day I’ve ever had!

12/6: Non-hill walk

Instead of doing the usual Thursday post-work hill walk, I decided to do a morning walk closer to home. A slightly late start and a wrong turn in the fog and, well, I was really late for work today. I need to get my ass in gear earlier…

Fun mailbox in south Austin

A slightly overcast day wasn’t going to stop me from walking. I decided to do the Colorado River Walker‘s annual Fairview Park walk. It starts from the same hotel as the Lady Bird Lake one and winds around some lovely neighborhoods in South Austin – complete with some fantastic looking homes – and ends up going down the SoCo shopping strip. Yes, I went shopping! And stopped at the trailer food park. I can haz Smorkin’ Labbits from Monkey See? And a pumpkin cupcake from Hey, Cupcake! And a slice of Margherita pizza from Home Slice? Oh, what a wonderful day.

12/1: AustinFit training walk

Remember how miserable I was after mile 8 of my last AustinFit group walk? Today was worse. I was almost crying. The pain got bad, once again, around 8 miles in. Is that my limit? Is it a hard limit or just something I need to work through? I don’t know. I guess only time will tell.
